Top 5 Movies To Watch About The Royal Family

It seems like everything in the news these days is about The Royal Family. From the birth of baby Louis to the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the Royals are everywhere. In case you haven’t had enough of them, or want to prepare yourself (and keep yourself awake) for the wedding tomorrow morning, here are a few movies you might want to consider watching.

Elizabeth – This 1998 film earned Kate Blanchett an Oscar nomination (something she’d earn again for the 2007 sequel), as it told the story of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Find out how she ascended to the throne, and the battles she had to fight to keep it. It’s a fascinating piece of history, and the film should have won Best Picture that year as it was far better than the film that won, Shakespeare in Love.

The Queen – Helen Mirren won the Best Actress Oscar in 2006 for portraying Queen Elizabeth II, and it was well deserved. The film takes place in 1997, just after the death of Princess Diana, and shows how The Royal Family struggled with their reaction to it. It humanizes the Queen, something that has historically been hard to do considering her place and status in the world.

The King’s Speech – Winner of 4 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor, The King’s Speech is the story of King George VI’s ascension to the throne and his struggle with stuttering, and the speech therapist who helped him prepare for the biggest speech of his life.

The Young Victoria – Queen Victoria didn’t have the best of starts to her rule, as this 2009 film starring Emily Blunt shows. She did have her romance with Prince Albert to her hold her steady though. This little-known film helps you see how she got through it all.

The Madness of King George – It’s well know that King George III went mad during his reign, and that his  lieutenants and Queen ran things in his stead from behind the scenes. This 1994 film is both touching and comedic as it shows how the rules were changed so that he could be kept in power and how those circling in to remove him were kept at bay.
