K-Pop Band BTS Makes Music History
If you haven’t heard of BTS yet, you probably haven’t been listening to the radio all that much. The K-pop band is on a role, and yesterday the boy-band made music history.
The South Korean seven-member band launched their latest album, Love Yourself: Tear, on May 18th, and for that week they sold the equivalent of 135,000 album units (100,000 of which were traditional album sales, and the rest streaming and downloading), which landed them in top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart. This is significant for two reasons. The first being it’s the first number one for the group. The second significance, and probably the most important reason, is that with the number one record, they’ve become the first K-pop band to top the charts in the U.S.. BTS’ last album, Love Yourself: Her, also made the charts back in October 2017, but it only reached number 7.
BTS has been on fire, from an appearance on the Billboard Music Awards last week, to a number one album, it appears as if they won’t be going away any time soon.
The South Korean president Moon Jae-in also tweeted about the accomplishment, saying “Congratulations to the Seven Music-loving Boys and Their Wings, ‘ARMY’! The songs, dance, dreams and enthusiasm of BTS energized and gave strength to young people around the world.”
