Mad Men Star Jon Hamm Set To Play Archangel Gabriel In Good Omens

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel Good Omens has been in the works for a long, long time. Almost 30 years ago it was almost made into a feature film, and since then it’s been sitting in development and going no where. Recently however Amazon Studios and BBC Two picked up the option, and writer Neil Gaiman was brought on board to be the showrunner. Now they have their first star on board as well. Mad Men star Jon Hamm, who recently graced the screen in Baby Driver, has signed on to play the archangel Gabriel, the primary messenger of God.

For those who have read the book, they will know that the story follows of an angel and a demon, who happen to be friends, searching for a missing child who just happens to be the Antichrist. Neither of the two want the world to end, even though the signs of the Apocalypse are all around them. In the novel Gabriel has a relatively small role, but he is described as tall, good looking and charismatic. Not to mention well dressed. Gaiman said in an interview with Deadline that back when the novel was first written that he and co-writer Pratchett has started plotting out a sequel in which the angels had a bigger role, and that’s where the expanded the role of Gabriel comes from. He went on to say that he feels Jon Hamm fits the role perfectly.

As for Hamm himself, he is pretty excited to take on the role. “I read Good Omens almost twenty years ago,” Hamm told Deadline. “I thought it was one of the funniest, coolest books I’d ever read. It was also, obviously, unfilmable. Two months ago Neil sent me the scripts, and I knew I had to be in it.”

Good Omens is set to be released in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video, and on BBC Two.
