Irish Movies To Help You Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
Once a year on March 17th we drink green beer and shamrock shakes as we celebrate everything Irish. St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in one way or another since the 17th century, and one sure fire way people celebrate is to go out and drink a pint in honor of the man who drove all the snakes out of Ireland. If that’s not quite your thing, you could lay back on your couch, and find an Irish movie to watch. Here are our favourites.
Brooklyn: This Academy Award nominated film stars Saoirse Ronan as an Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York. She leaves everything behind to make a life for herself, but after falling in love she starts to enjoy her new country. When a tragedy forces her to return home for a funeral however she starts to questions whether she will return to New York, and her new life, or remain in the country she was born in.
Once: Director John Carney is known for his music inspired movies, and this is the one that started them all. It’s the love story between a Dublin street busker and a Czech immigrant, told through a series of songs as they prepare a demo of his music that might just help him hit the big time.
Leap Year: Amy Adams stars as a women desperate to make it to Dublin in time to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day, because according to Irish tradition, a man who receives a proposal on Leap Day must accept it.
The Young Offenders: While this movie may not have hit it big in the theatres, it’s been given a second life on Netflix. Inspired by the true story of Ireland’s biggest ever cocaine seizure in 2007, this movie follows two teenagers who ride across the country by bike in hopes of finding a missing bale of cocaine that they plan on using to turn their lives around.
In Bruges: This quirky film stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as Irish hitmen waiting for orders in the Belgian city. This film has a little bit of action, and a whole lot of funny.
