The Top Films Of 2016 To Check Out Now

With 2016 quickly coming to an end it’s time to look back at the top films of the year. While there are still a few big buzzed about films yet to come out for wide release, at the very least you’ll have something to look forward to in the next couple of weeks. Here are our favourites.

Fences: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis return to the roles that won them both Tony awards in 2010, and trust us when we say you won’t want to miss their reunion. This film will receive Oscar nominations for both acting and best picture, and is based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer-winning play. It’s about a story about a disheartened black man trying to navigate the 1950s in the United States while raising his family and dealing with racism at the same time.

Manchester By The Sea: Casey Affleck will be hard to beat for the acting Oscar for his role in this film. He plays a grief stricken man who is shocked to learn that his recently deceased brother left him as the guardian to his nephew. The film is deep, dark, and at times depressing, while at the same time giving you a slice of life rarely seen on the big screen.

Deadpool: With so many Superhero movies coming out every year it’s hard to put any of them on a best of list, but Deadpool changed the game. Not only did they show that an r-rated superhero film could succeed, but it gave us a hero that’s not necessarily good. It’ll be interesting to see how other superhero films follow this one.

Nocturnal Animals: While the trailers for this film may be more than a little misleading, it’s really hard to describe what this movie really is about without giving too much away. Jake Gyllenhaal plays two characters, one of which is a character in a novel he’s written, and Michael Shannon steals the show as a fictional cop looking for justice. Trust us when we say, you won’t want to miss this one if you are a fan of thrillers.

La La Land: This film is easily the front runner for the Best Picture Oscar. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have played a couple before, and they do it again with such great charm that you just hope it works out for them. This film is a visual, romantic and musical delight.
