The Book of Negroes And Schitt’s Creek Are The Canadian Screen Awards Big Winners So Far
While the big Canadian Screen Awards trophies won’t be announced until Sunday’s gala presentation, The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television has all ready started handing out some of their awards. And so far CBC series The Book of Negroes and Schitt’s Creek are striking gold.
The Book of Negroes was a six-part miniseries that CBC co-produced last year, and so far it has claimed nine trophies. The series was based on the award winning novel of the same name by author Lawrence Hill, and among the awards it has all ready picked up were Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series for Lyriq Bent, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series for Aunjanue Ellis, and Best Direction in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series for Clement Virgo.
Not too far behind in wins however is the hit comedy series Schitt’s Creek, which claimed six of its own trophies. Canadian Second City Alum Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara star as the heads of a formerly wealthy family forced to relocate to a small town they once bought after losing their fortune. The awards it has won so far include Best Direction in a Comedy Program or Series for Paul Fox who directed the episode The Cabin, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series for Chris Elliot, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series for Emily Hampshire, and Best Writing in a Comedy Program or Series for series co-creator Dan Levy.
The Tatiana Maslany hit series Orphan Black was the next big winner with five trophies so far. The science fiction series that deals with cloning, won awards for writing, make-up, original score, photography and editing.
The Gala presentation broadcast of the Canadian Screen Awards is this Sunday on CBC starting at 8PM.
