Flight On Blu-ray Is A Great Addition To Your Collection
To say Flight is not the sort of movie you expect it to be would be an understatement. The trailers don’t really do it the justice it deserves, nor does it give you much indication on the sort of movie it is. While a plane crash is at the centre of the plot and allows the story to be told, the true theme of the movie is alcoholism and the effects it has not only on the life of the alcoholic, but on the lives of those who care about them.
Denzel Washington gives one of the best performances of his career as Whip Whitaker, a pilot who shows up for work drunk and miraculously manages to save the lives of the majority of people on board when the plane crashes. It’s no wonder he received an Academy Award nomination for the role.
The Blu-ray is crisp in its 1080p high definition presentation, and the 5.1 DTS audio makes you feel as if you are part of the crash when it happens. The combo pack also comes with the DVD of the movie as well as a digital copy of the film. The movie itself isn’t the only feature of the disc however.
The Flight Blu-ray has several special features, including the origins of the film, the making of the film, a break down of how they created the spectacular plane crash, as well as highlights from a Q&A session with the creators of the film. The origins of the film is a discussion with the writer on how the idea came to him while on a plane ride, whereas the making of the film showcases how the movie was made from start to finish. The most fascinating special feature however is the Anatomy of a Plane Crash where they show you how the plane crash was created. It’s shocking how realistic the scene is, and it is interesting to see how it was done.
Flight is the sort of movie that deserves a place on your shelf with your collection, and is worth the time and money to see. If for no other reason than to see Denzel Washington at his best. It is a shame it wasn’t nomination for best picture at this year’s Oscars, but at least it got a couple of nods.
