Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey have made headlines lately for their dramatic weight loss. The now gaunt actors have been losing serious amounts of weight for their roles in The Dallas Buyer’s Club. Since we’ve told you all about women who’ve lost weight in order to play roles in our post Actresses Who’ve Lost Weight For Roles, we thought we’d take a moment to appreciate the women who’ve actually gained weight for movie parts. Renee Zellweger put on 30 pounds to play Bridget Jones… TWICE! The famously thin starlet isn’t afraid to put her looks aside for the sake of cinema. Given that Bridget Jones is one of the most lovable characters she’s ever played, we have to say that the extra weight was totally worth it.
Julia Roberts put on 10 pounds to play Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love. On Gilbert’s real-life journey of self-discovery, she packed on 30 pounds while traveling through Italy, India and Bali, putting the “Eat” in Eat Pray Love.
Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. She had to hit the gym when filming wrapped, but Charlize admitted to enjoying putting on the weight by indulging in food. It didn’t hurt that the film role also won her the Oscar for Best Actress.
Hilary Swank seriously bulked up for her role in Million Dollar Baby. She put on 19 pounds of muscle by training 4 and a half hours a day, six days a week. She also ate 210 grams of protein a day. It was worth it! Like Charlize, she also won an Oscar for her performance.
Jessica Chastain had to put on 15 pounds for her role as Celia in The Help. The vegan actress added the extra weight on by upping her soy intake. “Soy helps you become curvy because it has estrogen in it,” she told Us Weekly. “So what I would do — and this is really gross — is buy cartons of soy ice cream, microwave it and drink it. It was disgusting, [but] wait [until] you see my boobs in the movie.”
