Top 5 Thanksgiving Movies

Shockingly enough, unlike a lot of other holidays, there aren’t a whole lot of great Thanksgiving movies out there.    We have managed to come up with our top favourite of those that are out there however.

What does it take to make a great Thanksgiving comedy?  How about Planes, Trains & Automobiles?  This classic 1987 comedy stars Steve Martin as a man desperately trying to get home for the Thanksgiving.  Unfortunately his plane has been cancelled, and he finds himself travelling with an obnoxious shower ring salesman played by John Candy.  This is yet another great John Hughes flick.

Hannah and her Sisters is bookended by two Thanksgiving dinners, and it stars Mia Farrow as Hannah, a poor women who finds her current husband falling in love with her sister Lee, and her ex-husband starting a relationship with her sister Holly.  It’s a pretty messed up drama, but what else would you expect from Woody Allen?

Ang Lee’s next movie The Life of Pi doesn’t hit theaters until next month, but if you want to explore some of his earlier flicks you may want to check out The Ice Storm.  Technically this movie takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving, but it still qualifies.  It follows the lives of two Connecticut families over the course of the weekend in 1973.

What is it about Thanksgiving weekend that says drama?  Home for the Holidays is a drama with a fair bit of comedy thrown in.  It stars Holly Hunter as a woman who receives a lot of bad news before heading home to deal with her crazy family.  The ensemble cast includes Claire Danes, Robert Downey Jr and Dylan McDermott.

And last but not least is a movie that many would include on their top Christmas movies list, A Miracle on 34th Street.  This movie starts on Thanksgiving though, during the Macy’s parade, and since Thanksgiving is considered to be the start of the countdown to Christmas we’re including it here.    The plot is simple enough, a young lawyer decides to defend an old man in court who claims to be the real Santa Claus.
