December Magazine Covers With Nearly Naked Stars-What’s Going On?
Tis the season to be naughty! It’s December, and the latest trend among A-list stars seems to be landing nearly naked magazine covers. We didn’t realize that being “Miss December” was still kind of a thing.
Instead of posing for a men’s magazine, Keira Knightley turned the idea of posing nearly naked on its head by going topless for the December issue of Allure magazine wearing a strategically placed Chanel jacket along with Tom Ford tuxedo pants. The cover shoot was shot by none other than famed photographer Mario Testino.
Keira has never had a problem going topless for her film roles, as long as it’s for the sake of her craft. “I’m quite rigorous about what gets exposed,” she told the magazine about how much skin she’s willing to expose in film. “No bottom half! I don’t mind exposing my t-ts because they’re so small — people really aren’t that interested.”
Although Keira Knightley’s topless photo definitely appeals to a fashion-savvy female audience, Miranda Kerr’s December 2012 cover of British Esquire is clearly made for the male audience. Miranda is striking almost the exact same pose as Mila Kunis in Mila’s November 2012 cover shoot for Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” issue. Although Miranda and Mila are both A-list stars capable of doing high fashion photo shoots like Keira — after all, Miranda is a supermodel and Mila was recently the face of Dior — we guess it’s just as important to them to keep their male fan base interested. We only wish that the cover shoot could have been slightly more original, especially given that Miranda’s British Esquire shoot came out just a month after Mila’s American Esquire cover.
Not to be outdone, Rihanna posed naked with a strategically placed arms and a leather jacket over her shoulders for the December 2012 issue of GQ magazine. Rihanna is the only woman featured in the magazine’s annual “Men of the Year” issue, and she definitely steals the spotlight from all the men featured in the magazine, including Channing Tatum who will soon be named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Her new goddess Isis tattoo, which she got in memory of her grandmother who died of cancer in July, is prominently on display on the cover, and her 6-page photo shoot inside the magazine is also as revealing.
It would be easy to assume that Rihanna stripped down for GQ due to the pressure of having to pose scantily clad for a men’s magazine, but that’s clearly not the case. All we have to do is look to Rihanna’s upcoming album cover art for her new release Unapologetic, pictured below, which hits stores on November 19.

Clearly, Rihanna actually likes the idea of posing almost nude. This isn’t the first time Rihanna has posed topless for GQ either. In December of 2009, three years ago exactly, the Bajan beauty posed topless wearing only skimpy shorts-shorts and rocking her bleach-blonde hair.
Rihanna has also posed topless for Esquire magazine — not once but twice — in the past as well. A bit of the exhibitionist perhaps?
Posing topless isn’t exactly a new thing, even among A-listers. Although they can easily cross the line into cheesy or — worse — scandalous territory, some of our favourite stars have stripped down for cover shoots over the years. Jennifer Aniston has some of the most famous naked or nearly naked photo shoots for magazines like GQ (she was also named “Woman of the Year” like Rihanna a few years ago). Our take on the whole thing? Sure nearly naked photos will sell men’s magazines, BUT that fine line is awfully thin, so keep it classy ladies. We- your girl fan base- will like you just as much if we see you all dressed up!
