The 84th Academy Awards Predictions

This year’s Academy Awards has all ready had its fair share of drama with producer Brett Ratner leaving after making an insensitive comment and his choice host Eddie Murphy following suit shortly there after, but with Billy Crystal making a return and some competition between best picture nominees it still has reasons to watch it this upcoming Sunday.  With Billy Crystal you know what you are going to get, and it’s definitely going to be heads and tails above last years dual hosts of James Franco and Anne Hathaway.  Here are our selections for the winners of the big prizes this year.

Best Picture: Out of the nine nominees, there are really only four pictures in the race.  Everyone is talking about The Artist and The Descendants, but Hugo and The Help also are very much alive in this race.  When the smoke clears and the dust settles however, we believe that The Artist will take the award.  It’s one of the most original movies to come out in a long time, and even though it being a black and white silent picture may throw some people, it’s definitely worth watching and one that most people will find themselves enjoying.  This year don’t expect a different director to win the Best Director award either, as Michel Hazanavicius with take it for his movie.

Best Actor: Gary Oldman deserves this aware much more than any of the other nominees, but it will come down to George Clooney for The Descendants and Jean Dujardin for The Artist.  This is a very tough call, but George Clooney is a favourite among Academy voters and will probably win because of that.

Best Actress: If we had to call this race a couple of months ago we would have picked Meryl Streep’s performance in The Iron Lady an Oscar winner, but The Help’s Viola Davis now has the upper hand partly due to the poor performance and reviews of Streep’s movie.  The Help really surprised people by how good it was, and Viola Davis played a huge part in that.  This will probably be the biggest surprise of the evening.

Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer  is the only real guaranteed winner during this year’s Oscars.  This is only his second nomination in his long, critically acclaimed career, and given the fact that he has never won before he’s going to be given this one.  He’s all ready won at the Golden Globes and the Sag Awards for the role, so look for him to pick up a third win.

Best Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer has won for her role in The Help at all the award shows all ready, and will probably follow suit here as well.  The only thing possibly hurting her chances is the nomination of Jessica Chastain who costarred with her in The Help.  If they cancel each other out, you may see Bérénice Bejo sneak in and take it.

The 84th Academy Awards airs this Sunday evening from Los Angeles.  Coverage starts at 7pm, EST.
