Hopefully you didn’t get too many oxblood coloured jeans and heavy knit sweaters for Christmas, because fashion is about to take a brand new turn for the bold and brilliant. (Though we’re sure you can make those look amazing too.) We finally feel like it’s okay to start looking to the spring collections for fashion inspiration, and these trends can easily be injected into your wardrobe even in the next few chilly months of winter.
1. The Power Suit. Runway shows from Stella McCartney (pictured), Dior, Saint Laurent, Mary Katrantzou and many more paid homage to the sleek androgyny of the menswear suit. This time it’s posh with boyish tailored pants and sometimes-boxy jackets. You can make the look more flattering by opting for more feminine, slim tailoring. We won’t argue with a little extra hit of pure woman.
2. Rippled Ruffles. Ruffles were this season’s peplum (though those stuck around, too.) Coming to us from the high-impact likes of Balenciaga and Givenchy, these ruffles were far from the dainty ones of seasons past, in high volume incarnations. Oversized ruffles are bound to appear on everything from dresses to jackets this year, and we’ll be adding some flounce to our wardrobes asap.
3. Black & White World. Choir members, wait staff and nuns have inspired the hottest colour trend this year — a lack of colour, rather. Zero-saturated black and white combos bounded down runways from Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein, and now you can take hints from high fashion by easily pairing milky white and inky black separates, or opting for stripes or blocks of black and white in your outfit.
4. Mixed Media. Runways flaunted a virtual collage of textures all in the same look, with mixed-up offerings from designers like Rodarte (pictured) and Erdem coming together in harmony. We can’t wait to try out some pairings of prints, fabrics, textures and colours.
5. You’re so transparent. Sheer transparencies made quiet noise in fashion over a year ago with sheer blouses becoming a trendy staple for 2011, but the sheer looks making waves this year are completely revamped with layers, soft hues and unexpected pairings. From Dior to Jonathan Saunders to Rochas (pictured), we are sure to be investing in some see-through in 2013.
