Michelle Obama Chooses Thom Browne Coat Dress For Inauguration

Michelle Obama wowed onlookers on Capitol Hill today when she arrived to the 57th Presidential Inauguration wearing a Thom Browne coat dress. Thom Browne was actually inspired by the pattern on a men’s silk tie when designing the navy silk jacquard dress that the First Lady wore today. Michelle topped off her look with a belt from J. Crew over the coat dress. The First Lady made sure to wear all-American designers for the special occasion. Designer Thom Browne, however, was in Paris today when he got wind of how excited fashionistas are about Michelle’s coat dress. Friends of the designer flooded his inbox with messages after seeing Michelle wearing the coat dress on CNN.

“It’s amazing and one of the most humbling moments, when you know she had so much to choose from. Words cannot describe it,” said Thom Browne to WWD about Michelle choosing his coat dress for the special day in history. “She knows what she likes and that’s what I aspire to – [to dress] someone who what she wants but she makes it her own. You can tell when she puts clothing on. It’s for her.”

Thom launched his men’s collection in 2003 but he’s only been designing for women since 2010. We have a feeling, after today, he’s going to get a lot of new customers.
