Raf Simons was inspired by Christian Dior’s love of the countryside for Dior’s Spring 2013 Haute Couture show. After Karl Lagerfeld treated guests of Chanel’s runway show to a re-imagined enchanted forest inside Paris’s Grand Palais, Raf Simons wowed his audience with an otherworldly garden as the setting for his Spring 2013 Haute Couture show. Set inside a tent, a gardener was actually still grooming the elaborate French garden as guests arrived in their seats. “I wanted it to literally be about the season; to be about the very idea of spring,” Raf Simons said in a statement about the show.
The first model to take the runway came out in a strapless gown in an icy shade of blue reminiscent of an early spring sky. Raf Simons used a palate of sky blues and blacks with bursts of colour like yellow and pink — the colours of early spring, like when the new year’s first flowers pop up even when winter hasn’t fully left the scene. Even the most structured of dresses had a lightness to them, the same way a daffodil can look at once impossibly intricate and opulent in its design and delicate at the same time, from trapeze dresses to trumpet-shaped gowns. Raf Simons maintained his minimalist aesthetic while at the same time including floral appliqué to many of his creations. It finally feels like spring is coming!
