Imagine having one of the most famous purses in the world named after you. We can only imagine that’s how Jane Birkin feels. In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas sat next to the British actress and singer on a plane. Jane had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment when, much to her dismay, the contents came pouring out. Jane unwittingly explained to Jean-Louis that she’d had trouble find a leather bag to travel with. In that moment, an idea for one of the most famous bags in the entire world was born.
Since fall is the season when many women think about investing in a bag that they’ll use for years to come, we decided to take a look at some of the most famous bags in the world, inspired by everyone from Jane Birkin to Lana Del Rey!
Although this purse was originally named “the Constance,” Gucci changed the name to “the Jackie” after Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was photographed carrying it multiple times while working as a consulting editor for Doubleday. Jackie was already a style icon at this time, and she definitely popularized this purse before it was even named after the First Lady. Changing the name to “the Jackie” was a smart decision on Gucci’s part.
Hermès renamed its sac à dépêches bag ”the Kelly” bag in honour of Grace Kelly. The American princess was photographed hiding her baby bump with her Hermès bag so many times that a photo of Grace with the bag shielding her growing bump even made the cover of Life magazine.
The Birkin bag is still one of the most sought-after bags in the entire world. Victoria Beckham has a collection that’s apparently worth well over £1million. Hermès created the bag in 1984, in honour of British actress and singer Jane Birkin.
Marc Jacobs incited a knock-off frenzy when he created the Stam bag, in honour of Canadian supermodel Jessica Stam.
As soon as songstress Lana Del Rey broke onto the music scene, it was clear she was going to be a fashion icon as well. Mulberry was quick to catch on to Lana’s appeal, immediately creating the Del Rey handbag in her honour.
Lana Del Rey isn’t the only trend setter that Mulberry has embraced. The British brand also created “the Alexa” bag in honour of fashionista Alexa Chung after seeing a photograph of Alexa carrying Mulberry’s famous men’s briefcase called the Elkington.
