Iconic TV & Movie School Girl Looks

September shouldn’t mean putting away your style for another school year, and some of the most memorable schoolgirls in film and TV history showed us how to bring scholarly polish to the halls in trendsetting outfits fit for the top of the class. We’ve picked our favourite fashion forward pupils who have upgraded the school uniform concept to an entirely more chic level.

Alicia Silverstone In Clueless

Alicia Silverstone’s iconic Clueless Valley girl Cher Horowitz was more than just the “As If!” queen — she was also one stylish student. In her coordinating plaid skirt suits, argyle prints, blazers and knee-highs, Cher took her own girly California spin on the school uniform. With her quirky ensembles, fabulous hats and fuzzy pens, Cher made high school look good, even if  ”good” is all relative to nineties fashion choices.

Blake Lively And Leighton Meester In Gossip Girl

When we think of the most high-fashion high school students, immediately Gossip Girl‘s Serena Van Der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf come to mind. Though The Upper East Siders have since graduated from Constance Billard School and moved on to college life, these consummate sophisticates have had us in envy at every episode with Serena’s luxe coats, stunning scarves, towering boots and heels and oh, that hair, and Blair’s prim yet sultry dresses, tailored skirts, feminine bows and girly headbands. This series has done as much for fashion as it has for television, and the show’s blonde and brunette beauties have injected sex appeal into even the most functional school looks with their couture sensibility.

Tiffani Amber Thiessen In Saved By The Bell

Could Kelly Kapowski actually have been fashion decades of her time? While Tiffani Amber Thiessen’s character on the hit nineties teen series wore some pretty out-there looks, her head-to-toe florals, belly baring bralets, high waists and neons were all big trends on the runways this summer! Though her printed high-waists and crop tops definitely got refreshed by designers like Prada and Dolce & Gabbana for 2012, 20 years later we can still see why Kelly had Zack Morris crushing, hard.

Rachel McAdams And The Plastics In Mean Girls

Though Lindsay Lohan’s pathetically unpopular character Cady Heron took a turn for the stylish, the original fashionable girls of this film were Rachel McAdams as Regina George, Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Weiners and Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith. In provocative (especially for high school) pleated minis, skin-tight baby tees, stilettos and lots and lots of pink, The Plastics had sexy school style down pat. While we aren’t sure how the male students would learn anything with those girls around, we sure won’t forget their flirty fashion choices for the classroom.

Mischa Barton In The O.C.

Though co-star Rachel Bilson has become the off-screen fashion icon since the series ended, it was Mischa’s Marissa Cooper who had us rushing out to buy ballet flats and cut side-swept bangs like she wore through the halls of Corona del Mar High School. The laid back yet trendsetting California-girl style of the show’s troubled bad-boy lover was youthful and, we think, more realistic for high school students than today’s top schoolgirl series, Gossip Girl.
