Spain’s “Ugly” Olympic Uniforms

“Can I supersize that gold medal for you?” That’s what we imagine Spanish Olympian Saúl Craviotto is saying while wearing his Olympic Opening Ceremony uniform for his country. Craviotto took to Twitter to poke fun at his team’s outfit, which looks like it was inspired by McDonald’s cashiers.

Craviotto was diplomatic with his own opinion on the uniform. The reigning sprint canoe gold medallist tweeted: “At home trying on my Olympics clothes. It’s best if I don’t give an opinion, I will leave it up to you …”

Craviotto’s teammates were less polite about their feelings towards their country’s choices in Olympic uniforms, which were actually produced by a Russian company called Bosco and not on their own turf. Field hockey player Alex Fàbregas tweeted: “Olympic equipment, there are no adjectives …”.

Tennis star Carlos Moya said: “Looking forward to seeing Feliciano Lopez wearing the official Olympic uniform. He’ll never have worn anything so ugly in his life.”

Lopez, a fellow tennis player, tweeted back: “It’s loud, very loud. But it’s what we have, man. Spain is different and it always will be.”

That’s a positive way of looking at it! Spain’s less than fashionable uniforms will stand out even more this year, given that this is setting up to be the most fashionable Olympics yet. As we told you before, designers the world over are teaming up with their home countries to design high fashion uniforms. Everyone from Stella McCartney for the UK, Ralph Lauren for the USA and Giorgio Armani for Italy are involved. Even Bob Marley’s granddaughter is designing Jamaica’s uniform!

We’ll be covering the Opening Ceremonies live on Friday. Stay tuned for the best (and the worst) highlights from the athletes and the stars.
