As 2011 comes to a close, we have been reminiscing over the most popular fashion trends of the year and found that our most popular trend of the year was the wearable maxi skirt-sweater combo. Not too surprising as fashion mavens loved their maxi skirts (one of the top five trends of the year) so when fall’s cooler air blew in, everyone wanted to know how to get maximum mileage out of their favourite piece. Here’s how our experts recommended wearing the trend that captured the heart of fashion lovers everywhere.
It makes us giddy when a runway look can be easily translated for real life wear, and this fall’s maxi skirt and sweater combo is just such a trend. Slouchy yet refined, this may be the ideal bridge between the elusive comfort vs chic balance that is usually so difficult to master. As comfortable as a pair of sweats but infinitely more stylish we’re already wearing our skirts and are just waiting for cooler weather to throw a sweater over our tanks.

Not to choose favourites, but Max Azria may have just about perfected this look. A belted waist and drapey skirt fabric maintain an über feminine silhouette yet pockets and proportion keep the laid back vibe in check.
Always ahead of the latest trend (if she’s not starting her own unique must have craze– remember hobo chic?) it’s no surprise to see Ashley Olsen out & about in this fashion forward look. We’re not totally convinced that her sandals are the best choice of footwear (we would’ve gone with a wedge), but as usual, she manages to pull off the unexpectedly off-beat. Hmm on second thought maybe those sandals aren’t so bad…
Missoni knows how to rock a pattern and colour so while the label may be on-trend with their maxi skirt & sweater the look still manages to feel quintessentially Missoni.
