Chanel Takes Off For Spring 2012 Haute Couture Fashion Show

Chanel hinted that they were planning one of their most extravagant fashion shows ever for Paris Haute Couture week and they did not disappoint. The Air Chanel plane was constructed within the Grand Palais for a flight inspired couture show.  With fashion’s top names sitting in their designated row of the plane, Karl Lagerfeld delivered over 60 couture looks on models sporting anti-gravity inspired sky high hairstyles to match the setting.

While the backdrop may remind you of an episode of Pan Am, Lagerfeld told reporters backstage that he didn’t want his inspiration to be too literal.

As you would expect from a sky inspired collection, blue was the dominant colour ranging from light sky hues to dark navy. While there was a lack of handbags, models kept their hands busy in the pockets on almost every look from classic Chanel suits to elegant gowns. Many of the looks were also given structure with very wide necklines.

Dresses from cocktail to evening wear made up most of the collection, many with drop waists in rich fabrics and two-tone or ombré shades of blue. Lagerfeld’s love of black also came through with oversized cocoon jackets and long skirts. The evening wear was elaborate and intricate with beaded dresses, airy chiffon with a slight shimmer, all over sequins and delicate floral embellishments.
