Haute Couture Week is underway in Paris, meaning the fashions on the runway are even more fabulous than ever. Here is a look at some of the shows in Paris so far:
Christian Dior
John Galliano was inspired by artist René Gruau, who worked at the house in the 40’s and 50’s, for this haute couture season. Galliano brought Gruau’s vintage sketches to life with a dreamy collection. Layer upon layer of tulle and bubbling, billowy fabrics created voluminous gowns with huge skirts and long trains. The designer included every colour from the deep reds that opened the show to nudes and neutral tones and dark greens, blues and the occasional pop of pink. The looks were retro fashion fantasy. Armani Privé
On the flip side, Giorgio Armani went futuristic for his approach to Spring 2011 couture. The collection had space age appeal with metallic looking fabrics. The garments looked like liquid metal with pant and skirt suits and dresses reflecting the light. Other garments looked like protective armor with jewel encrusted bodices on long gowns. Colours were dark steel grey, blue, red and green with shades melting into each other. Some reviewers were surprised and confused by this futuristic line from Armani Privé. See the show here:
Chanel
Haute couture is sometimes about larger than life garments, but Karl Lagerfeld showed how the simple can also be extravagant. For Spring 2011, the classic Chanel suit was shown in many variations of nearly nude, beaded and weaved fabrics. Dresses and coats had timeless cuts. Almost all of the looks were accompanied by matching leggings. Flowing and sparkling fabrics were present, but not overwhelming. Accessories were quite simple for haute couture with only ribbon necklaces, drop earrings and ballet flats being shown. The colour palette was soft with pale pinks, grey, blue and purple. Some were underwhelmed by Chanel’s very wearable feminine haute couture show. See the garments here:
