The Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket is uniquely Canadian. It’s colourful stripes are something we all recognize right away. This week The Bay teamed up with some of Canada’s top designers to make their blanket a fashion statement.
Called The Blanket Statement, one-of-a-kind coats were made by designers such as Pink Tartan, Comrags and Smythe (pictured left) out of the blankets. The creations by the 10 designers are all completely unique and fashion forward while making you proud to be Canadian. The rest of the designer involved were Harricana, Jeremy Laing, Lida Baday, Erdem, Todd Lynn, Klaxon Howl and Krane.
Joyce Gunhouse and Judy Cornish of Comrags said they were interested this collaboration because “As Canadian designers, we are always interested in projects that reflect our Canadian heritage. Often we neglect to see, until we leave Canada, the wealth of inspiration right in front of us. We’ve tried to show that we can be inspired by our own rich heritage through the Hudson’s Bay point blanket.”
Many of the designers were inspired by the history of The Bay and the blanket. Jeremy Laing explained the idea behind his design: “I applied a woodsy hunting jacket caplet to a cute A-line city coat shape, and then cinched it with a sturdy leather belt for a striking silhouette — perhaps reflecting Hudson’s Bay Company’s evolution as a major player in the early fur trade and settlement of Canada to its role as Canada’s national department store.”
The coats are a part of a new Hudson’s Bay Company collection, a Canadian lifestyle brand, which includes maple sugar cubes, scented candles, Pink Tartan sweaters and even canoes. According to Fashion Magazine the coats will be on installation at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The Star reports that none of the coats will be sold, but many of the designers do have items available in the collection.
