Singer Lily Allen tossed both the music and fashion world a curve ball this week announcing that she is quitting music to take up a career in fashion.
This isn’t going to be just another celebrity fashion line though. Lily Allen is thinking outside of the box and is opening up a designer clothing rental store with her sister called Lucy In Disguise. Lily Allen will most likely be able to use her fashion friends like Karl Lagerfeld, whom she was a muse for, to ensure that her store is packed with the hottest styles.
In an interview with BBC Newsbeat, Lily explains the ideas saying: It’s about making fashion democratic… That’s the idea behind it. It’s about getting really nice clothes, but letting people rent them for affordable prices so they can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won’t cost them a million dollars.
Lily Allen isn’t the first with the idea of creating a designer rental store. In Canada, we have Hush Couture. They rent out Diane Von Furstenberg, Vera Wang and Michael Kors gowns starting around $100 for 3 days for those who only need a dress for one event. And in the US there is Rent The Runway, which is an invite only designer fashion rental offering names like Cavalli, Badgley Mischka and Christian Siriano to those lucky enough to get invited. In a time when expensive fashion houses are suffering, this idea will probably bloom for those that still want to look the part, but are feeing the pinch on their wallets.
