Changez (Riz Ahmed) is a brilliant young Pakistani man who makes his way to America to chase his dream of becoming rich and powerful. Not only is he among the top in his class at school, but he manages to get a high paying job at a brokerage.  As he climbs the corporate ladder the unfortunate events of 9/11 occur, and his world slowly starts to spiral downwards.  He is harassed by airport security, employees at businesses he is downsizing, and even his own girlfriend.  Changez starts to see the world differently, and when his conscience starts to tell him that the work he does brings him dishonor he quits and returns home to Pakistan.  It’s there that he starts to gain a reputation as being sympathetic towards a radical terrorist organization, and when an American citizen is kidnapped the CIA send an agent in to see what he knows.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist would have been a better story if it was true.  Racial profiling unfortunately has been rampant since 9/11, and there are plenty of stories that can be told.  Watching a true story such as Changez’ on a news program such as Dateline or 20/20 would have been more compelling.  The movie could also have benefitted from being a little more complex than it was.  It plays out very simply, and holds very little in the way of surprises, which makes it boring at times.  The love story between Changez and his girlfriend played by Kate Hudson feels like a last minute addition, and if there was a place to add in a stronger feeling of betrayal this would have been it.  The biggest problem with it could have been the fact that there was little to no chemistry between the two.  The only real connection that felt real between any characters was that between Changez and his mentor played by Kiefer Sutherland.  That being said, Riz Ahmed does his role justice, and you do find yourself caring what happens to him every step of the way.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a slow drama that you can wait to see at home, if you have to see it at all.  There are plenty of real life stories that can be watched instead that cover the subject, and your time is better spent watching them instead.

Alright all of you devoted Trekkies, unless you have been hiding in a cave for the last few years, you have noticed that J.J. Abrams has been slowly but surely rewriting Star Trek history. This is how:

In the last Star Trek movie in 2009, we met with young captain Kirk played by Chris Pines, in this film- a time travelling bandit called Nero goes back in time and changes the Star Trek ‘history’. This has given the writers and directors of the new Star trek prequel franchise a lot of leeway in veering off the original tv show and even previous Star Trek movies. The question remains though - are the Star Trek purists going to like this?

Without giving away the key elements of the new film – Star Trek Into Darkness, let’s say the one thing we can tell you is that captain Pike’s life is – ahem, very altered AND there is a new, blue eyed Caucasian with a British accent who is playing Khan. While the new Khan, played by Benedict Cumberbatch is equally as villainous and unstable, frankly, in our opinion, no one can match the original role played by Ricardo Montalban.

Star Trek fans are all around the globe, and it seems like no matter where you go you’ll run into someone who loves the television shows and movies.  Even celebrities have gotten into the game and appeared in the series from time to time.  We take a look now at our top 6 favourite celebrities who’ve graced our screens in the series.

Winona Ryder:  Who would have thought that this two time Oscar nominated actress would ever appear in Star Trek?  But she did in J.J. Abrams’ franchise reboot in 2009, and as Spock’s mother nonetheless.  Of course it really shouldn’t be too shocking, after all she also appeared in the Alien Franchise as well.

Jennifer Morrison:  This House and Once Upon a Time actress also appeared in the Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, and like Winona she played one of the iconic character’s mothers.  In this case Kirk’s.  With lineage like Jennifer Morrison and Chris Hemsworth, no wonder Kirk is so good looking.

Christian Slater:  In sixth movie of the Star Trek franchise, Christian Slater made a cameo so small that you would have missed it if you blinked.  But regardless, he was there partly due to his mother being the casting director of the movie, and partly because he was such a huge Star Trek fan.  Did you know that he once shaved his eyebrows as a kid to play Spock on Hallowe’en, only to have them never fully grow back properly?

Kim Cattrall: Before she was gracing the small screen  as Samantha in Sex in the City, Canadian actress Kim Cattrall was crossing the galaxy as Spock’s apprentice in Star Trek 6.  Her role was slightly more than a cameo however, and her character was crucial to the plot.

Kirstie Alley:  You might remember her as Rebecca in Cheers but for millions of Trekkies around the world she will be forever known as the first actress to play the Vulcan Saavik.  She didn’t come back for the two sequels due to fears of being typecast, but we think she did all right for herself.

Kelsey Grammer:  Another Cheers alumni (not to mention it’s spin-off Fraser) who decided to play a role in Star Trek.  In his case he played a ship Captain trapped in a time loop, and appears on screen for only a couple of minutes.

Unlike other award shows, the Billboard Music Awards are based solely on the sales and play data from the Billboard charts for the year. After thinking back over the most popular songs on the radio and in stores, we predict who we think will go home with top awards at the Billboards this weekend.

Top Artist

Singles “Payphone” and “One More Night” were huge radio hits that you couldn’t escape. Thanks to Adam Levine’s popularity on The Voice, his band got extra airplay and exposure. Maroon 5 have been one of the biggest bands of the year and should get recognition.

Top Hot 100 Song

The category could go one of two ways. The award will either go to indie song “Somebody The I Used To Know” from Gotye featuring Kimbra or to Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen for “Call Me Maybe.” We still have both songs stuck in our head, so we can’t decide.

Top Billboard 200 Album

While many other artists were losing money, fans were actually shelling out money to go and buy Mumford & Sons’ Babel on iTunes, cd and vinyl. The folk rockers are the face of a whole new music genre and deserve to be honoured.

Top Duo/Group

Mumford & Sons were the biggest band of the year hands down. They are playing every music festival of the summer. The only way we see them losing this one is if Fun. sneaks by with their catchy singles.

Top New Artist

Carly Rae Jepsen dominated the airwaves, so even though she might not be the “coolest” nominee in this category, she was the most popular singer of the year.

Top Female Artist

Taylor Swift needs to get one nod for her breakout album that proved she’s more than just a country girl. She has some stiff competition from Adele and Rihanna though, so it’s anyone’s guess.

Arrested Development – May 26

There is no show more anticipated this summer than Arrested Development. People haven’t just been waiting a season, but years for the continuation of this show that follows the crazy Bluth family. The return of Arrested Development is going to give you a big reason to sign up to Netflix as it’s the only place you will find new episodes.

The Bachelorette – May 27

Our favourite guilty pleasure is back this summer. Memorial Day sees the return of this show with Desiree Hartsock as the new lady looking for love.

The Killing – June 2

The Killing was originally cancelled, but after much talk it is returning to AMC for a third season. Cast members Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman are returning as our detective Stephen Holder searches for a new runaway girl.

Mistresses – June 3

This sexy new tv show is perfect for summer’s steamy nights. The show follows four female friends, led by Alyssa Milano, in their illicit relationships with married men. This could be your new guilty pleasure.

America’s Got Talent – June 4

The judges table looks different this season with the departure of Sharon Osbourne and addition of Spice Girl Melanie Brown and supermodel Heidi Klum. This could give the show a boost and fresh feel for season 8 of the talent competition.

True Blood – June 16

Last season of this vampire show was so hot and the cliffhanger left us aching for more. We will get all of our answers soon enough when True Blood returns with new episodes showing us what is happening with the new version of Bill.

Under The Dome – June 24

Stephen King’s story hits the small screen this summer in the adaptation of his book about the small town of Chester’s Mill, Maine which finds itself trapped in a barrier one day.

Dexter – June 30

Fans will get to say farewell to Dexter early this year, as the final season of the show has been moved up to the summer. Your favourite serial killer will get his final trip through Miami. Expect big drama from star Michael C. Hall as he bids the show adieu.

The Newsroom – July 14

Aaron Sorkin’s much discussed television drama about the workings of a cable news program returns for its second season. The show’s first season split fans and critics. Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Olivia Munn and new addition Paton Oswald return to try to make you fall in love with season two’s hard hitting drama.

Breaking Bad – August 11

Another beloved show is ending this summer as 2013 will be the final time we see Walter White and Jesse Pinkman cook up their famous drug that got everyone hooked on the award winning series.

Chris Pine has recently become Hollywood royalty starring role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness (in theatres this weekend). While he has become recognized for his classic good looks, the 32-year-old star manages to keep up a laidback, easygoing persona despite the glare of the spotlight. Here are a few facts about Chris Pine which may be news to you:

Took longer than average to stop sleeping with a nightlight: It’s hard to picture the fearless Captain Kirk shying away from anything- let alone the dark! However, Chris Pine admitted in an interview with the Associated Press last year that he grew up with a fear of the dark, and slept with a nightlight on until the ripe old age of 24!

Was a self-described nerd growing up: Despite his current pin-up status in Hollywood and extensive female fan base, Chris Pine wasn’t always Mr. Popular. He recently mentioned in a new interview with Men’s Health that he spent some time as a “pimply faced loner” as a teenager before his acting career took off.

Cries easily and isn’t ashamed to admit it: Captain Kirk definitely has a sensitive side, and doesn’t try to hide it when he’s off screen! The same interview mentions how the emotional actor will let the waterworks run while with his girlfriend, or at a sad movie.

Has a degree in English: Chris Pine is more than a handsome face- he also graduated from UC Berkeley where he studied English. He later went on to study acting in England, preparing himself for the challenges of Hollywood roles from the get go.

Friends with Zachary Quinto before becoming co-stars: Although Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have spent countless hours together filming both Star Trek flicks, IGN reported in 2009 that the two were apparently friends from before and met one day while at the same gym. Hollywood is a small world, after all!

Big Bang Theory has grown from the little show about a group of nerdy scientists to the biggest show on television in six seasons. Over 20 million people tuned in to the latest season of the show to catch the drama of Dungeon & Dragon night, Comic Con and trying to find a girl who will put up with your quirks. Kunal Nayyar has enjoyed playing Raj Koothrappali, an Indian astrophysicist, who can’t talk to girls without a having a few drinks first and who’s been watching his friends get relationships, while he spends Friday nights alone. We caught up with Kunal Nayyar to chat about Big Bang Theory’s success and Raj’s journey to getting a girlfriend. See what Kunal Nayyar told us.

Real Style: When you started on Big Bang Theory did you ever think the show would get this big?

Kunal Nayyar: As an actor you never do. You think ‘Oh my god, I hope this pilot gets picked up.’ When the pilot gets picked up, you think ‘Oh my god I hope they don’t recast me.’ Then when the first episode shoots you think ‘Ok I made it. I hope all nine episodes shoot.’ Then ‘I hope we get the back nine order.’ Then ‘I hope we get our second season.’ For me, when I really thought that this was getting a little crazy was when we got sold into syndication and showed five times a week on all different channels. That’s when I would walk down the street and everyone would know who I was. People started stopping me on the street for photographs. That’s when it really began to feel real. You read about things and hear the numbers, but when fans start approaching you, screaming your name, taking photographs and saying stuff like ‘You got me through six month of chemotherapy,’ ‘Your show has meant so much to me,’ ‘My children want to be physicists now’ or ‘You’ve been a voice for the science community.’ Those things made it become tangible and that’s when it started to feel real for me.

Real Style: You have made science popular for a generation. As an actor, does that feel weird to you?

Kunal Nayyar: It’s weird when people come up to me and ask me questions because they think I’m smart. We are so ingrained in these characters and the writers do such a wonderful job making it sound like these words are coming out of our mouths. It’s sort of art imitating life or life imitating art. I never get that saying right. I don’t think anyone has ever used that quote correctly.

Kunal Nayyar talks about how much Raj has grown throughout this season after the jump.

Real Style: Raj has had an interesting season this year. It feels like he has grown a lot.

Kunal Nayyar: These characters are not the type of people who wake up one morning and have an epiphany and say ‘My social anxiety is gone’ or ‘Let’s read a self-help book.’ Their social issues and anxiety issues are deep rooted issues they have had since they were children and throughout high school. All of their social issues or anxiety issues are not going to be worked out in one season or two or three. These are things that they have to work on to integrate themselves into the real world. Or not, because Sheldon [Cooper played by Jim Parsons] doesn’t really care. I think this is true of Raj especially, because he is seeing all of his friends have relationships. Now they have to plan for vintage video game night and D&D night. Those things were just steady things in their lives that, now that they have significant others, aren’t there. All of those nights that they used to have, now Raj is all alone, especially since Howard is now married.

Real Style: Is it fun now that you have been playing Raj for so long now that you do get to watch him grow?

Kunal Nayyar: I have such a deep rooted affection for this character. I have been one with his pain. I have been one with his triumphs. I have been one with his failures. I have been one with his successes. I love this character. I think he has such a good heart. That’s the thing about these guys. They have such good hearts. They really love each other. They are terrible liars. They have no malice in them. They are just good people. I want to see him succeed because I love him. Just as a fan cares for a character, I care for him and maybe a little more so because I live with him. I really want to see him do well. At the same time, I think it would be unrealistic for him to figure out all of his problems. He has to hit rock bottom before he can build again. It doesn’t sound like a comedy does it? [laughs]

Fortunately for the fans watching Raj and the Big Bang Theory gang put themselves together again is a guaranteed laugh. Catch the season six finale of Big Bang Theory tonight and catch up with all of the episodes on syndication.

There is no word yet on who will star in the movie, but Scarlett Johansson says that this is a long time coming. She’s been working with Truman Capote’s estate for years trying to get the movie adaption of this book right.

The novel is about a 17-year-old in 1945 who decides to skip out on a trip to Paris to stay in New York City and fall in love with a Jewish parking attendant.

You can add this to Scarlett Johansson’s resume which already includes film actress, Broadway star, model and singer.

Greenpeace has released a shocking ad targeting Coke for the environmental impact their plastic bottles are having. The ad shows sea birds falling from the sky dying because of the plastic bottles you get your soda in. They want to be able to air the ad on television because Coca-Cola is fighting new environmental legislation in Australia.

The ad uses shocking photos of birds that have died with their stomach full of bits of plastic. They say that sea birds think that plastic bottles are food from the sky, eat bits of them which fill their stomach and causes starvation and death.

Coke hasn’t responded to the ads, but it is getting out there. The ad has almost a million views on Youtube now.

If you just can’t get enough of Chris Brown, the controversial singer has just launched his own app to get even closer to the drama. The Chris Brown Channel is now available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch to give you a constant and more interactive stream of information on Chris Brown.

On the app, Chris Brown will be sharing his experiences in studio, at home and on tour with fans. It’s said that Chris will interact with fans on the app, as well it integrates his Facebook and Twitter activity. This includes his recently drama with on-again off-again lover Rihanna, who have recent been active on Twitter accusing each other of cheating.

In a press release, Chris Brown said, “”I am so excited to get closer to my fans – to bring them into my world, hearing from me directly, in my own words wherever I am, whenever they want. Through my channel app they can be part of my music, my art and my life, day in and day out.”
