This week it’s an interesting mix of movies, including two new ghost flicks, a science fiction movie, and a heart warming drama. Of all of them the ghost movie starring Daniel Radcliffe will probably come out on top, but the other ghost movie may steal some of it’s thunder.

Daniel Radcliffe was all over Toronto yesterday, giving interviews and making public appearances before heading over to the Scotiabank Theatre for the Canadian premiere of his latest film The Woman In Black.

It’s the last week of January, and with it comes four thrillers. One’s a restricted action flick, one’s a comedy, one’s a drama, and one’s a crime/heist. It’ll be interesting to see which one comes out on top, or if Underworld keeps the crown.

Early this morning previous nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak announced the list of nominees for the year’s biggest night in film. Most Januarys are pretty mediocre when it comes to movies, and this one has been no exception. This week’s new releases are another mishmash of genres that all pretty much seem to be leaning towards action. There’s a fourth movie in a series, a straight action flick, a modern day adaptation of a Shakespeare play and a World War II air battle movie.

Ricky Gervais was surprisingly back as host of the Golden Globes, but he was far tamer than last year. The Descendants and The Artist took home the most awards, while Moneyball and Bridesmaids were shut out. Homeland and Modern Family were tops on TV.

Last week the Oscars released their first trailer to hype people up about the big show on February 26th. The video starred Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel who are sent on a mission to find the Host. The Host is of course Billy Crystal. This week Funny or Die released a behind the scenes outtake video, and thanks in part to Robin Williams it’s pretty funny. After a couple of Fridays with very few new movies opening, we finally see some fresh flicks hitting the theatres. It sounds like a veritable smorgasbord of genres, with an action, a comedy, a biography, a cartoon and a horror. The one with the best chance of topping the box office is a re-release however, which means technically a new movie won’t bring the most money in.
