The Bachelor Canada Premiere Review- Can Brad Smith Carry The Show?

The first ever Bachelor Canada premiered tonight on City tv. As you know, we have followed the American Bachelor and Bachelorette shows for a few years ( see recaps here), so were excited to finally see a Canadian version of the show. While we would love nothing more than to gush and coo over the Canadian Bachelor…right now we are reserving our judgement.

For the Premiere show recap, lets start with the positives. After seeing at least the first 5 minutes of the Bachelor-Brad Smith- shirtless and getting a close up of  his tattoo, we learned that the former CFL player is from Hudson, Quebec. That his dad, Larry was not only a CFL player himself and the former CFL commissioner ( that’s a big deal) he is also a current Canadian senator. (So it’s safe to assume Brad has had a good life growing up).  The voice over told us about two sad events in Brad’s life, that of close friends passing and this being Brad’s wake up call. Finally it was time for the show to start. Alas, hence come the negatives:

The host, Tyler Harcott, obviously has spent a long time watching the U.S. Bachelor as he tried to copy Chris Harrison’s mannerisms to a T. Except he wasn’t Chris Harrison, so it felt odd especially after he stated how for years we have watched the ‘other’ show and finally it was our turn. Perhaps he can just be himself?

Tyler met Brad at the limo and took him in for a chat at the Victoria BC mansion used for the show. Then it was time to meet the Bachelorettes.  And here is where it (mostly) fell apart.

The apperance and the behaviour of the Bachelorettes -with the exception of perhaps 3 or 4 women, did nothing to showcase Canadian women as stylish and sophisticated. And what about the outfits? From ill fitting to extremely short, the dresses left a lot to be desired. Only two dresses stood out as pretty and appropriate- Clarice and Clara’s. Perhaps the show’s producers should consider bringing in a stylist to help the girls with their outfits. It will make the show look better and the girls feel better.

Here is the other big negative about the premiere- based on Brad’s reaction to the women he met, we can already predict the final five. And this is supposed to be at least 5 episodes away! So where is the mystery? Why create a Canadian version of  The Bachelor to just follow a predictable, packaged formula. Why not take the premise and then make it our own with interesting and unique Canadian content? Just a thought..

There was one element of surprise to the show when Jillian Harris, Canada’s most famous Bachelorette, showed up as the apparently last Bachelorette of the evening. Frankly we were relieved to learn that she was there just to interview the girls and give Brad her opinion. She looked good, but somehow different…

After the group elimination ceremony tonight here’s who stayed on: Bianca ,Sophie,Tia,Kara,Michelle V.,Nicole,Chantelle, Brittany,Laura B.,Michelle B.,Laura F.,Stephanie, Melissa Marie,Gabrielle.

The previews look interesting, so we will definitely watch the next episode…and we’ll see maybe the show will surprise us after all.
