George Hamilton And La Cage Aux Folles In Toronto Is A Must See Show

Tonight was the opening night of La Cage Aux Folles revival at Mirvish’s Royal Alexandra Theatre. Our review?  We loved it! If you want a truly feel good experience- go see this play! George Hamilton – yes the tanned man himself, plays Georges, the owner of a cabaret style night club in St.Tropez and the brilliant Christopher Sieber is his transvestite, long time lover- Albin.

Various hilarious calamities ensue, when Georges’ straight son Jean-Michel brings home the ultra conservative parents of his new fiance. Albin plays his mother- in drag of course- but is soon discovered. In the end all ends well.

What’s remarkable about the story, is that it is as relevant today as when it first premiered in 1973 as a French play and in 1978 as a film. The film was dubbed “Birds Of A Feather’ in the US. La Cage Aux Folles was brought to Broadway as a musical in 1983 and went on to win 6 Tony awards. The story- how love has  no gender- remains as touching as ever. The 2010 Broadway revival starring George Hamilton went to to win 10 additional Tony awards, including one for best revival. And we are so glad that the show with the original Broadway cast is now in Toronto.

Who knew George Hamilton can sing? Well he does, quiet nicely, thank you very much. Judging by the standing ovation the cast received at the end of the show- we would say La Cage Aux Folles is going to be a hit with Toronto audiences.
