Premiering tonight on CBS is the brand new show called Vegas, starring Dennis Quaid as a former Rodeo cowboy turned sheriff and Michael Chiklas as a Chicago mobster who moved west to set up his own operation. In preparation for the show we’ve compiled a list of our favourite movies taking place in the Sin City.
What’s a list about Vegas movies without one of the biggest caper movies of all time. Ocean’s Eleven was first made in 1960 staring the Rat Pack, and it was remade in 2011 starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and many other well known superstars of the day. Both movies are about a conman who gathers together a group of thieves to rob a casino, but the movies play out completely different from one another, and are both worth the time to watch.
Nicholas Cage won an Oscar for his role in Leaving Las Vegas. He plays a suicidal alcoholic writer who moves to Las Vegas to basically drink himself to death. It’s based on the novel by the same name, which is a semi-autobiographical account of the writer’s life. Elisabeth Shue was also nominated for an Oscar for her role in the movie.
The Hangover is the most recent entry on the list, and it follows the misadventures of a group of friends who travel to Vegas for a bachelor party. Unfortunately after a night of partying that they don’t remember the groom is lost and they must backtrack the evening to find out what happened to him. It’s much better than the sequel that followed, and a third film in the series is set to hit theaters next year.
The question that rocked everyone’s world in 1993 was would you let your wife spend the night with another man for a million dollars. The question came about thanks to Indecent Proposal, a movie starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson.
Casino is an adaptation of a non-fiction novel, but all the names and places have been changed or created specifically for the movie. Robert DeNiro stars as a man called on by the mob to oversee the day to day operations of a casino in Las Vegas. Joe Pesci is the mob enforcer sent to make sure the mob gets their cut of the action. The movie is long, but well worth the watch.
