Taylor Swift’s Ex-Boyfriends & The Songs They Inspire – Including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

Taylor Swift’s first single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” off her upcoming album Red, is about an ex-boyfriend. Go figure. In fact, the entire album is inspired by her relationships from the last two years. In a statement about the songs off the album, Taylor said, “They’re all pretty much about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years.” Since Taylor dates famous guys in the public eye, we can easily figure out who has inspired her album. Although she’s happily dating 18-year-old Conor Kennedy right now, we took a walk down the memory lane which is Taylor’s last relationships to figure out who has been inspiring her lately.

Joe Jonas
Sure, they dated a long time ago, but as we all know, the first cut is the deepest. Before Taylor Swift was the award-winning household name that she is today, she dated Joe Jonas in July of 2008. The relationship may have only lasted 3 months, but it’s gone down in history as a warning to Taylor’s future boyfriends: Do NOT break up with Tay-Tay over the phone! Taylor made a point of letting the world know that Joe broke up with her in a 27-second phone conversation and wrote the song “Forever and Always” about Joe.

Taylor Lautner
Taylor Squared should have been the stuff that country songs are made of. The two met on the set of Valentine’s Day and had the same first name. If that doesn’t equal true love in your late teens and early 20s, then we don’t know what does! We’re not really sure how or why their 3-month courtship came to a close, but we can safely assume that Swifty was the one who ended it. The relationship inspired the song “Back to December,” about a girl who didn’t appreciate the love that she had until it was gone: “It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you / Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine.”

John Mayer
Taylor met John when she did a guest vocal on his song “Half of My Heart” back in 2009, and the couple started dating at the end of that year, despite their 12-year age gap. John’s not exactly known for ending relationships without a little backfire. Just ask Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. John and Taylor’s relationship may have ended in June of 2012, but it has been immortalized in Taylor’s song “Dear John.” Taylor sings: “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?/ The girl in the dress cried the whole way home / I should’ve known.” Yikes.

Jake Gyllenhaal
Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal dated for a hot-and-heavy 3 months back in late 2010. He apparently dumped Taylor early in the New Year of 2011. We haven’t heard a song about Jake yet, so we have to wonder if Taylor’s latest single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” off her upcoming album Red is about Jake. Take a look at some of the lyrics: “So he calls me up and he’s like / ‘I still love you’ and I’m like, I’m just … / This is exhausting, you know like / We’re never getting back together / Like ever.” We wouldn’t put it past Jake to be a little sappy. Only time (and possibly Taylor herself!) will tell who the song is actually about. Until then, we’re betting it’s about Jake.

    1. Michele says:

Dear John is NOT about John Mayer and is more than likely about Jake. Taylor has made a public statement telling John not to be so full in himself when he made comment on her single Dear John. I think we are never getting back together is about that loser.
