Now Playing – Movies Opening August 31st

August has really been a tough month at the box office, with no movie coming out on top to claim the month as theirs.  The profits Hollywood saw in June and July haven’t really carried over into August.  This week there are three new flicks, a depression era gang movie, a horror movie and a comedy.  It’s a mixed bag for sure, and with the long weekend in front of us they could all bomb.

Lawless is about a gang of bootleggers who have to deal with corrupt lawmen in Virginia.  It stars Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce.  Of all the new releases this one looks to be the best, but it’s been hard to call what audiences will or will not like this year.

Last week’s addition to the horror movie genre bombed and is already on it’s way out of theaters, so it will be curious to see how well this week’s The Possession does.  This movie about a young girl who gets possessed by a demon after buying an antique box at a yard sale claims to be based on a true story, but how much of it is true is unknown.  The trailer for this one looks creepy, but you can make anything look scary in a minute and a half.

For A Good Time Call… stars Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller who starts a phone sex line together in order to make ends meet.  The movie is advertised as a comedy, but word is has more than a few touching, dramatic scenes included as well.
