The dog days of summer are upon us, and with it comes four new movies. This week there is a little something for everyone: one for the action lover, one for the kids, one for those who like a little drama in their lives, and one for those wanting a little bit of heartfelt laughter and cheer.
When The Expendables came out two years ago everyone knew it was only a matter of time before a sequel came out. This time around action movie director Simon West takes the helm, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis taking larger roles. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and Liam Hemsworth join the all ready impressive cast of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren. The first movie was full of action, and really with this cast what else would you expect from the sequel? Do you really even care what it’s about?
ParaNorman is about a young boy who can speak to the dead, and once he discovers that his town is in danger thanks to a centuries old curse it’s up to him to prevent it from happening. This animated flick is from the same team that brought you A Corpse Bride and Coraline, and it could very easily be a mid-summer hit if parents can drag their kids inside for a couple of hours.
When Whitney Houston passed away a few months ago there was a lot of talk about her performance in Sparkle, where she plays a struggling mother and a former music star. It will be interesting to see how this one does, considering the success of The Help, which came out this time last year. The movie is about three sisters who form a Motown group only to find their success threatening their family life.
And finally this week we see the release of The Odd Life Of Timothy Green. A couple who are unable to have a child bury a box in the backyard full of their ideas of what makes the perfect kid, only to find a child born in the backyard shortly there after. This is one of those movies that will probably have a stronger presence on DVD than it does in the theaters, so if you want to see it you’d better see it soon.
