Wow, we did not see this one coming. Emily chose Jef as her fiance on The Bachelorette finale. We did think she would choose Arie. She didn’t. Here is why:
At the live finale, after the final rose, Emily said to Arie ‘ I’m sorry. I learned to be more direct. I just had more confidence in what Jef and I had’. Arie responded ‘ I didn’t feel that anyone’s else story was as strong as ours. This is why I was so shocked.’ We also learned that Arie flew to Charlotte to try to speak to Emily to try to get closure. He apparently spoke to her briefly on the phone and left his journal/diary on her doorstep but didn’t meet with her. When he called, she made the mistake of not telling him that she was happy with Jef. After she returned the journal to him -unread on the show. Emily said ‘ Out of respect for Jef and Arie, I don’t feel reading his private journal would have changed anything’. ‘ I never doubted your love for me’.
Here is a recap of what happened in Curacao:
Emily’s family, her mother, father, brother and his fiance all flew in to Curacao to meet the final two men- Jef and Arie. The first person they met was Jef and he impressed them all with his incredibly poetic prose and frank and open declaration of love for Emily.
The next day the family met Arie and were impressed with him as well. Emily’s father gave both men his blessing. This left Emily even more confused than before, as they didn’t give her the answer as to who was the best man for her. At this point Emily was still undecided between the two men. Her decision was made up the next day. When she has her final date with Jef.
They started the date off at the beach where Jef insisted, in his sweet way, that he should meet Ricki. He said to Emily ‘Put yourself in my shoes. How would you feel if you didn’t get a chance to meet my child’. Reluctantly she agreed and as expected Ricki and Jef, the big kid, hit it off swimmingly. This gave Emily the confidence to make her decision.
She asked to speak to Chris Harrison and said that she has made her decision and didn’t want to put Arie through the embarassment of the final proposal. Instead she chose to meet with Arie on their pre-planned date. This is where through a veil of tears, she told Arie that she has more confidence in her relationship with Jef. He understandably looked shocked and disbelieving. In the end he did thank her for not putting him through the final rose/proposal situation.
As we mentioned in the beginning. Arie did not take the breakup easy. Emily made a mistake of not speaking or dealing with Arie in a way that gave him the closure he needed. He even came to see her after the show ended and she wouldn’t explain to him that she was very happy with Jef. Finally it was Jef who called Arie to give him the closure and the comfort he needed to move on. Arie said on the live show ’ I’m in a good place now. Speaking to Jef made me feel better to get through it’.
In any case as they say all is well that ends well. Good luck to Jef and Emily who are planning to embrark on a trip to Africa and after that Jef is going to move to Charlotte. Emily did get exactly who she wanted.
