The 32nd annual Genie Awards took place last night in Toronto at the Westin Harbour Castle, and like most awards shows it held a few surprises among the 22 awards given out. Of course one of the surprises of the night happened the day before when co-host Andrea Martin dropped out due to apparent other obligations. CBC personality George Stroumboulopoulos took over full hosting duties however, and was more than capable of handling the show by himself.
The big winner of the night was the Academy Award nominated film Monsieur Lazhar, which picked up six of the nine awards it was nominated for, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method received 5 awards, but lost out on all the major awards other than a Best Supporting Actor nod for Viggo Mortensen who celebrated by showing off a Montreal Canadiens flag. Cafe de Flore had 13 nominations going into the awards show, and came away winning only 3 on the evening.
Andrea Martin made a special recorded appearance, where she made fun of herself for not being there. In the video she tried to find a replacement for herself, and spoke to several Canadian personalities, including Peter Mansbridge and Steven and Chris. Unfortunately she couldn’t find anyone willing, or able to take over the job, thus George was left on the stage by himself. While the recorded appearance was an attempt to make light of the situation, we doubt that anyone found her cancelling 24 hours before the awards all that funny!
Stay tuned for our red carpet and behind the scenes story , photos and video from the 32nd annual Genie Awards!
