You may know husband and wife team Cortney and Robert Novogratz from their hit show 9 By Design, where you saw the pair balancing their careers with their home life of raising 7 children in New York City. The Novogratz’ are back for 2012 in a new series Home By Novogratz premiering on HGTV Canada. In each episode you will see how the pair create amazing designs for any budget, while still managing to keep their busy family under control. Real Style Network had a chance to speak with the Novogratz’ during the holidays to find out how they balance all of their roles and a few design tips to take away.
Real Style Network: How did you meet?
The Novogratz’: We met at a going away party for Cortney’s sister.
Real Style Network: Did you both always know that you wanted to have a large family?
The Novogratz’: Yes, but we never anticipated seven kids in NYC.
Real Style Network: Why did you decide to raise your family in New York City, instead of moving out to the suburbs?
The Novogratz’: We love everything about NYC. We are also fortunate to have a townhouse, so we kind of get the best of both worlds.
Real Style Network: What challenges does having the cameras in your home raise?
The Novogratz’: Well it’s tough to take a shower sometimes and, of course, mornings are never fun, but it’s a cool experience. We love our film crew as they are part of the team now.
Real Style Network: How do you balance your careers, kids and the show?
The Novogratz’: Having our own business and working out of our home is the key.
Real Style Network: How would you describe your own personal style?
The Novogratz’: It’s very similar to our home design: Mix of old and new and fun.
Real Style Network: Where do you get your inspiration for each house from?
The Novogratz’: We always want to keep writing new stories. We get our inspiration from travel, big cities, art and life.
Real Style Network: What are some fast, easy and affordable ways for people to give their home a style update?
The Novogratz’: A fresh coat of paint can change an entire look. It’s the one thing we all can do.
Real Style Network: What will be some of 2012 biggest home designer trends?
The Novogratz’: We feel strongly art is going to be big with the masses. You can get great prints, photographs, and art at a fair price. The web has become a great place to purchase it.
Real Style Network: What are the best colours to use if you are looking to sell your home?
The Novogratz’: White is the safest color, as per selling It’s a balance of making the home not too personal, but still a little more unique than the others to set you apart.
Real Style Network: What is one piece to change that can give a room an instant update?
The Novogratz’: A dining room table.
Real Style Network: When searching for a designer, what should you look for?
The Novogratz’: Someone who is different from all the rest.
