2011 Emmy Award Winners

It was a night of fantastic dresses (see our post on the Best Dressed) and great jokes by the host Jane Lynch, but overall there weren’t very many surprises when it came to who won the awards.

Mad Men took home the top Drama prize for the fourth consecutive year, and Modern Family took home the Best Comedy award for the second consecutive year.  Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory won his second Best Comedic Actor in a row as well.  Julianna Margulies won her second Emmy (her first was in 1995 for E.R.), and first for lead Actress in a Drama.  Jon Hamm continues his streak of being nominated and not winning (this year he lost to Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights) and thanks to Jim Parson’s win Steve Carrell went home empty handed once more as well.  The biggest surprise of the night went to Melissa McCarthy for her win in the Best Actress in a Comedy award for her role in Mike and Molly.

The Emmy’s seem to be always awarding the statue to the same old thing year in and year out, and it doesn’t seem ready to change any time soon.  It’s understandable if the shows or actors/actresses stay at the same level, but they don’t.  It’s disappointing to watch an awards show when you know who will win because they won the year before.  If this show wants to stay relevant they will have to change the process somehow.  Perhaps they need to look at who is voting and let some young blood have their say.
