Happy New Year everybody! January is typically a slow month for new movies, and the ones that do come out are generally weaker than what you would see later in the year. This week is no different. We’ve got a new Nicolas Cage flick, and two movies opening to a wider release.
First up is Sofia Coppola’s latest addition Somewhere. This movie stars Stephen Dorff as a Hollywood action star who finds himself re-examining his life after his ex-wife gives him their daughter to look after. This movie is basically about boredom with life, and finding a way to get out of a rut. Check out our review.
Also opening in wider release this weekend is Country Strong. Gwyneth Paltrow and country superstar Tim McGraw star in this movie about an aging/fallen country star and her relationship with a rising new writer. Together they help him climb the ranks and her mount a comeback. By the sounds of things Gwyneth does a phenomenal job singing the music, and has been praised by critics for her work.
The last entry this week, and only new release is the Nicolas Cage vehicle Season of the Witch. Two crusaders return home from war and discover their land is devastated by the plague. The church of course believe that a witch has cursed them, and the two men agree to take her to a remote abbey so the monks can help break the curse. If this movie does as bad as it looks it probably won’t come even close to breaking the top ten this weekend.
