She may have not walked away with an Emmy last year, but Nina Dobrev was hands down one of the most memorable beauties from the red carpet. Not only did The Vampire Diaries starlet wow in a red Donna Karan mermaid-style gown, she also beat out A-listers for the top spot on many best-dressed lists for the night. We all know that half the battle of getting a memorable look is making sure that your hair and makeup complement your ensemble. As we anxiously await seeing our favourite stars on the Emmy Awards’ red carpet tonight and finding out who steals the show and who misses the mark, we decided to take a look back at Nina Dobrev’s 2011 Emmy Awards hair and makeup.

Part of the reason Nina looks so stunning is because she didn’t overdo it in the hair and makeup department. She understood that wearing a wow factor dress means going for a more subtle look in the beauty department. We love Nina’s over-the-shoulder waves. Nina’s hairstylist Riawna Capri of West Hollywood’s Nine Zero One Salon told Us Weekly that she got Nina’s look by using products by Wella Professionals. “First I blew out her hair with Oribe Rock Hard Gel to give it lots of body and lift and set the hair in velcro rollers. Then, using a 1 1/4 curling iron, I curled and pinned her hair in all horizontal sections,” said Capri. “After her makeup was done we dropped the pins, and brushed her hair off to one side. I lifted her bang area with a rattail comb and sprayed it with a strong holding spray: Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray. Then I finished with Unite Shina-Mist Spray to give her hair a radiant glow on the red carpet.”

Nina topped off her look with smoky eye makeup, nude lips with a glossy finish and perfectly shaped eyebrows.
