Marilyn Monroe – The Hair, Skin & Makeup That Made Her An Icon

When it comes to enduring beauty icons, very few women can come close to the legend that is Marilyn Monroe. From the iconic, classic red lipstick to the thick, tousled platinum blonde mane; Marilyn remains a beauty phenomenon.

When Marilyn reigned supreme in Hollywood, there were no plastic surgeons or botox to be had. The stars of the 1950’s and 1960’s relied on their good genes, fantastic hair and makeup artists and top notch, custom skincare. Famed dermatologist Dr. Erno Laszlo worked closely with Marilyn and supplied her with her skincare regime (of which she was said to be obsessed with). The Erno Laszlo company still exists today and has just released the ‘Hollywood Collection’ a line of updated skincare products used by Laszlo’s famous patients including Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and of course, Marilyn.

When it came to makeup, Marilyn loved a bold lip colour, sultry eye makeup and arched eyebrows. She was a huge fan of false eyelashes (Glorene was her favourite line), Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, Elizabeth Arden eyeliner, Max Factor lipsticks, Revlon nail polish and Shiseido perfume lotion. She also loved to visit hair stylist ‘Kenneth’ who was asked to fix her hair after it began to fall out following the filming of “Some Like It Hot”. He helped straighten and smooth it out using hair oils and creams.

In celebrating the beauty of Marilyn, we wanted to share one of our favorite YouTube Marilyn Monroe makeup videos. In it, famed makeup artist Tanya Burr gives a step-by-step guide to the creating the 1950’s makeup of Marilyn Monroe.
