Tips for Shine-Free Skin

While the scorching summer temperatures may be good for lounging poolside, it tends to leave our skin in another state: shiny. The dewy look may be acceptable after a workout or a long night of dancing, but when you’re heading to work or out for a date, the last thing you want is to look like is a glowing disco ball. The great thing is you can actually do a lot of damage control before you even leave your house, just by calming down oil production and keeping that glow at bay. Read on to find out how to make sure your skin stays shine-free.

Face wash: Even if you aren’t prone to breakouts, an acne fighting face wash will take care of your excessively oily skin. Look for one that contains salicylic acid which will help break down and prevent oil from building up in your pores. We love Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Cream Cleanser, $8, for its gentle formula that will cleanse—but never clog—your skin. The special formula also contains skin soothers to prevent irritation and potential dryness.

Moisturizer: While moisturizer may not be necessary if you are feeling excessively shiny, it is always good to keep skin hydrated to keep it looking young and fresh. In the humid summer months stick to a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer with a water based-formula for a product that won’t add excessive shine to your face. Try Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisturizer, $7, for a thin formula that won’t deliver that greasy residue.

Primer: Simply applying foundation in the hot summer weather can actually melt the product into your pores, causing oil build up and breakouts. Before applying any makeup apply an oil-free primer that will help keep your skin in check all day long. The primer will set your skin and create a barrier to prevent oil from coming up throughout the day. Laura Mercier makes a fabulous oil-free foundation primer made especially for those who are prone to oily, acne-prone, sensitive skin.

Mask: For a temporary fix before a night on the town or a big event, try an oil-absorbing facemask. Choose one that is specifically formulated to absorb oil like the Nude Deep Cleansing Mask, $52. This lightweight mousse is an intensive treatment that purifies the skin and absorbs oil for fresh and healthy looking skin.

Blotting papers: Most of us naturally have more oil in problem areas, like the T-zone, than in other areas of the face. While it is controllable, the summer heat can definitely bring on the shine in a major way. While we can try to prevent the shine with some of the ideas mentioned above, it is always good to keep some handy blotting papers in your bag for a quick fix. The Body Shop makes an affordable version that is perfect for when you are out and about.
