There’s nothing worse than spending an hour styling your hair, only to have the summer heat wreak havoc on your ‘do, taking you back to square one. Whether you’ve got curly hair that won’t stay straight or straight hair that flattens out in the humidity, the best way to beat the heat is to just work with it by opting for a style that actually benefits from a little added moisture: the messy beach look. Here’s how to get the look in three simple steps.
1. Wash hair in the evening: This look requires a little bit of thinking ahead, but it’s worth the prep time. Wash your hair a couple hours before going to bed. If you have unruly curly hair, condition it as usual, but if your hair is naturally straight, skip it and just use shampoo. When you’re finished, towel-dry your hair, and add a light mousse like Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Wave Defining Mousse, $4, and comb the mousse through your hair.

2. Let your hair air-dry until is moist but not wet. Divide hair into 10-12 sections, depending on the thickness and length of your hair, and twist into separate mini-buns, securing each with an elastic. When you’re finished, wrap a silk scarf around your head to avoid hair breakage while you sleep. Leave the mini-buns in overnight.

3. In the morning, if your hair still feels wet, give it a quick blow-dry it for about a minute. If not, begin taking the elastics out. Shake out the mini-buns but avoid brushing hair, aside from running your fingers through it. Finish the look by spraying and scrunching hair with a beach spray like Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray, $24, which adds salt to your hair to give it a nice day-at-the-beach texture.
