Tips For A Thinner Thanksgiving

Just because it’s Thanksgiving doesn’t mean the calories won’t count! If you’re hoping to stick to your diet during the first big holiday of the upcoming cold weather season, here are some healthy tips to keep in mind while you get festive with the family.

Eat Breakfast
While it’s tempting to want to save all your calories for the big meal, you’re actually better off having a protein-filled breakfast so that you don’t arrive at Thanksgiving dinner starving. Have something light like an egg white omelette with fresh fruit. That way, when it’s time for the big feast, you won’t be tempted to pile heaping spoonfuls on your plate. Eating a small meal beforehand will actually give more control over your appetite.

Get Sporty
It’s easy to consider Thanksgiving a day to indulge, but there’s no reason why you can’t add a long walk with the family to your to-do list for the day. If you add a little activity to your day before the big feast, you chances are you’ll be less likely to over-indulge at meal time, since you’ll already be feeling good about your commitment to good health.

Be Mindful Of Appetizers
Sometimes it’s the little things that are actually the calorie killers during the holidays. Try to resist the appetizers altogether, especially things like chips and baked goodies, or better still, bring your own plate of veggies with a light dip as part of your offering for the hostess. This way you’ll be sure there’s something that you can snack on that won’t be chocked full of calories.

Enjoy the Turkey
It’s actually good to know that the star of the feast is actually great for you! High in protein and full of nutrients, turkey is actually a wonder food in the weight loss department. Opt for a skinless piece and be mindful of the gravy.

Be Side Dish Savvy
Be careful of the carb-heavy foods like mashed potatoes and stuffing, which can also be high in fat content. Stick to green veggies like beans and Brussels sprouts for the healthiest option. If you happen to be hosting the Thanksgiving party, why not cook a separate “healthy” mashed potatoes option, like mashed cauliflower? That way you won’t feel like you’re missing out.

Skip Seconds
Just because you’re saying no to a second plate on Thanksgiving doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy leftovers tomorrow! It’s easy to scoop a little more mashed potatoes onto your plate, especially when they’re sitting there in the middle of the table. This is probably the hardest step to follow, but it’s actually one of the most important ones. Serve yourself one plate and, no matter how tempting the stuffing looks, stick to what you put on your plate the first time around. Be sure to chew your food slowly so that you feel full before you’re tempted to go for round No. 2.

Enjoy Dessert Wisely
Everyone deserves to end the holiday with a special treat. Apple cobbler makes for a nice light option to pie for those looking for a lower calorie and low-fat dessert option. If you’re dying for a piece of pumpkin pie though, cut a small sliver and top it with light Cool Whip as opposed to ice cream or just enjoy it on its own.
