 City
HISTORICAL CITY ON THE VERGE OF A COMEBACK.
BY LEE GREENE

a long time Atlan-
as the “World’s Playground”.
Originally founded in the 1850s as a health
and spa resort town, Atlantic City hosted many upscale visitors from nearby Philadelphia and New York City. The railroad that connected the new city to Philadelphia was bringing over 500,000 people a year by 1874. And by the 1920s, dozens of posh hotels were constructed.
Fans of the show Boardwalk Empire will be familiar with Atlantic City during Prohibition
